Frequent Asked Questions About Satan and Demons

How much did Satan know about the coming of Jesus Christ?

I had a friend who told me about how one night when he was sleeping he woke up and a demon was right over his head. He told the demon to leave, in Jesus' name, and it flew out. He also said that one knocked down one of his pictures - a picture of Jesus. I asked him how he knew that the demon was there and he said it was because he felt its presence. Do you think this could have been a real encounter with a demon?

What do you think of the possibility of people who have been diagnosed with personality and other mental disorders as really having demons in them, that could be cast out by a Christian?

How much did Satan know about the first coming of Jesus? With Satan being cast out with his followers he was here many thousands of years before Christ was born. How much knowledge did they have about his birth?

Answer:    In Matthew 8:29-30 Jesus cast demons out of the maniac of Gergesenes. In verse 29, the demons said, "And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?" (Matthew 8:29) Clearly they knew what their end would be and as servants of Satan, he certainly knows as well.

Jesus speaking about the judgment of the lost at the end of the Tribulation said, "Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41) "His angels" are the demon who serve the devil.

It is clear that Satan and the demons know their end will come at the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. They fully understand and know what the Bible says. "And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day." (Jude 6) That "great day" is the second coming of Christ. Revelation 20:2-3 plainly state that Satan will bound in the "bottomless pit for a thousand years" (the Millennium). At the end of the Millennium he will be released for a short time and once again deceive men on earth. However, God says, "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever." (Revelation 20:10)

Answer:    Many people wake up in the night from a semi conscious state of dreaming and have a hard time distinguish between the dream and reality. I have, like most people, experienced this numerous times. You wake up afraid and feel strong emotions. Thus if your friend said if "felt" the presence of the demon....I am sure he felt something. However, there is no mention in the Bible of anyone...."feeling" the presence of a demon. What people feel is fear of the unknown and associate that fear as the presence of a spirit. That is probably what happened. You should ask the friend what did the supposed experience do for him or what as his reaction in his life? Why does he think a demon would appear to him? You see, what a lot people believe has no basis in Scripture.

About the picture of Jesus being knocked off the wall. That picture was not a picture of Jesus Christ. We do not know what He looked like and any representation of Jesus is fakery. God says make no image of Him...that includes Jesus Christ. So why would a demon knock off the picture that falsely is said to represent Jesus? It adds weight to the story, but it is not a well thought out story is it. Any representation of Jesus does not honor the Lord....so who does it honor? Who is the father of lies?

I have had many people relate to me similar experiences. Not one of them was a committed or faithful Christian. Are demons real....yes they are. Can the possess a person? Again the answer is yes. Are there people who are in contact with spirits (demons)? Again yes and they are called "familiar spirits." This story doesn't fit any biblical example.

Answer:    Demons cannot possess a Christian as the Holy Spirit indwells the believer. When a person is saved who has a demon(s) they are cast out and cannot return. Nowhere in the New Testament Epistles do you find any instruction to Christians to cast out demons, but instead believers are told to preach the Gospel and resist the devil's attacks.

Paul advised Timothy about this, "And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will." (2 Timothy 2:24-26) In other words preach the Gospel to the lost that they may be saved and repent and be delivered from the snare of the devil.

There is a lot of instructions to Christians not to allow the devil to influence them which means clearly he can attack believers, deceive them and lead them astray, but not possess them. Believers are to resist them devil which would include his demons, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7) (See 1 Peter 5:8-10)

Answer:    In Genesis 3:15 at the fall of man, God told the serpent, Satan, "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." (Genesis 3:15) This was the first Messianic prophecy and God told Satan that the Messiah would come and deliver a fatal blow to his head. God said also that Satan would bruise the heel of the promised Messiah who would destroy him. A blow to the heel is not fatal. Satan has been allowed by God to "bruise" the heel of Christ through the centuries, but his end is sealed.

Throughout the Old Testament God continued to foretell the coming of the Messiah. Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 are classic prophecies concerning the coming Christ and His atoneing work. Abraham was promised that through his "seed" (descendant) would come the one who would bless all nations. (See Gen. 12:1-3, 18:18, Galatians 3:16, 19, 29 )

So....Satan has always known his end and of the First and Second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ (Messiah). When you understand that Satan knows his end and yet continues to try and fight against God and exalt himself above God it gives you some incite into the evil of pride. Isaiah spoke of Satan, "For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north" (Isaiah 14:13)
