I was always wondering..why are some Christians Democrats? I may be understanding wrong, but I have always thought that Democrats were more liberal/supported views like pro choice, etc. Is there something that I am overlooking? Thank you for spending your time to answer this.
Answer: America has never been a truly Christian nation, but it founders respected biblical principles and incorporated them into our constitution, laws and society. That is why some have called America a Christian nation. However, most of our founding fathers were deists and pantheists and very few were Bible believing Christians. Many of our founding fathers were influenced by Christians and biblical principles and God has blessed America in the past is because of the faithfulness of Christians who were the salt of this nation. That changed during and after WWII when in 1948 the Supreme Court took the Bible out of public schools and 1962 removed prayer. Prior to that prayer and reading the Bible were allowed in schools and was the basis of teaching morals. Therefore even children who grew up in homes that where Christian prinicples were not taught received an understanding of moral teachings. We now have three generations which have grown up without the benefit of being exposed to social morality. The result was been the decrease of morals. Evolution, atheism, agnosticism, abortion, homosexuality, crime of every sort, and secular humanism is accepted as normal.
In 1740, even before the USA was a nation, public schools were started with the purpose of teaching not only the three "R", but biblical principles. The Bible was used as a text book and even spelling lessons were taken from it. However, in the 1960's Secular Humanism became the religion of America. So yes, America was founded to a great degree on Christian principles and in that sense has been in the past largely a Christian nation. Sadly, America now is a humanistic nation that officially denies even the existence of God and accepts evolution as its creator. In 2005 the Supreme court banned the teaching of Creationism or Intelligent Design as the origin of life. The acceptance, of homosexuality, as a acceptable life style by society and legalizing abortion has assured that God will no longer bless this nation and the USA's doom is certain. Christians have little influence today because of opposition to God and the Bible, and also the apathy and unfaithfulness of those who profess to be Christians. Few churches in America today believe, teach and preach God's word. Where the Bible was once preached, now apostasy has taken over. True biblical Christians today are fast becoming like those in the early years after Christ, being aliens from society, persecuted, belittled and demeaned. Our once great nation is now on the brink of diaster and is ruled by ungodly men and women.
Answer: Clearly, Bible believing Christians who are supporting the Democratic party and supporting what it stands for and its agenda. The issue is that the official platform of the Democrats is pro abortion, for same sex marriage, and for promoting homosexuality. All these things are plainly sin according to the Bible. A Christian who loves the Lord should be against these sin and certainly not support a candidate or a party that is forcing these sins on society.
True believes can understand that many who profess to be Christians show no evidence of salvation or righteousness as seen by the way they lives their lives. Christ and living a righteous life means nothing to them. They clearly are not obeying God or trusting in His provision for them. It is very revealing that numbers of professing Christians even in Bible believing churches voted for Obama, the Democratic party. They clearly are not heeding Jesus words, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33)
Recent polls report that about 73 percent of Americans say they are Christians, which means that many who profess to be saved voted for a president and party that openly was pro abortion, same sex marriage and supports the homosexual agenda. They voted contrary to God's word and supported the murder of unborn children and upheld homosexuality which God says is an abomination to Him. Let's look at what God says about the platform of the Democratic party.
God says about abortion: "Thou shalt not kill." (Exodus 20:13).
About homosexuality God says:"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." (Leviticus 18:22)
About marriage God states: "And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." (Genesis 2:23-24)
Nothing can be plainer stated in God's word. Yet, professing Christians blatantly ignored God's word and the commandments of their professed Savior and voted for murder and homosexuality. Clearly this brings into question their salvation. Jesus addressed the matter of those who professed to know Him yet, lived in iniquity:
- "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:21-23)
I have talked with several Democrats and they said they did not agree with these sinful things, but that they believed the Democrats would be better for them financially. So the issue with them was it is okay to support sin if one benefits financially. Applying their logic, any sin that we might benefit from then would be okay. Yet, God says of sin:
- "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23). God says about our livelihood, "I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." (Psalms 37:25)
God's word says we are to trust Him and live righteous lives, trusting in the Lord for our welfare.
Concerning joining with sin and those who advocate sin, God says "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you" (2 Corinthians 6:17)
Further God says "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14)
There are Republicans who also support these sins as well, but the difference is the Republican party has so far denounced them. However, whether a candidate is Republican or Democrat their position on these sins is the real issue and no true born again Christian should support these sins by supporting those who advocate them.
We are clearly in the end times and experience a growing apostasy in many churches. "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition" (2 Thessalonians 2:3) The falling away is apostasy when those who profess to know God, turn away into sin and false doctrine.
So what we are seeing is a clear indication we are in the last days of the end times.
For those of us who love God and His word we will remain true to Him and continue to look for the rapture. That is what all true born again believer do because their faith and trust is in God, not in Washington or some charismatic deci ever. We have the Lord with us to guide and strengthen us.
It is a good question that many professing Christians should think about and pastors should address in the pulpit. True Christians who voted for the Democrats committed sin against God and should immediately repent of their gross sin and ask God's forgiveness. (1 John 1:9)
